Code Compliance Guideline

Any building with a malfunctioning sprinkler or alarm system may be put on fire watch. In the event of a fire or other emergency, the person keeping watch over the building must not have any other responsibilities. They are also in charge of alerting any residents to the situation. The accountable person on site shall place the defective system in test mode until repairs have been performed. Every 30 minutes, a documented journal of the Fire Watch intervals must be preserved. Businesses that are open around-the-clock must maintain a Fire Watch continuously until the system impairment has been fixed. There should only be forty-eight hours of fire watches (48) hours, at this time a fee of $25.00 will be charged. Every seven (7) days thereafter the first 48 hours the same fee of $25.00 will be charged.

When systems malfunction or become compromised due to various reasons, businesses cannot put themselves on fire watch! A company may only be placed on fire watch for unanticipated shortcomings by the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ).

Businesses may be placed on fire watch and placed in test mode for routine maintenance.

Please get in touch with our office between the hours of 8 am and 5 pm, Monday through Friday, if you have any questions concerning fire watches or want to be taken off the fire watch. The duty inspector will address your request if you phone the non-emergency dispatch line at 757-385-5000 after hours.
